Reminder 5 : 1

Bukan mudah untuk mengajar anak kecil membaca. 
Hubungan ibu-anak atau bapa-anak atau guru-anak mesti bagus.
Kalau kita pelik kenapa anak kita lambat ok setelah merajuk, mungkin dia perlu dibelai lagi.


REMINDER 5 to 1:
Tahukah kita menurut kajian Barat, SATU perbuatan yang membawa  emosi negative memerlukan LIMA perbuatan positif untuk mengembalikan emosi positif di dalam hubungan ( Aduhai berpeluh! ).

Sekiranya hati anak kita terluka kerana kita mengabaikan panggilannya dik terasyik bermain telefon, maka kita perlu melakukan LIMA perbuatan positif seperti:
1. Merenung matanya sambil memohon maaf.
2. Memeluknya.
3. Senyum ikhlas menembusi jantung hatinya. 
4. Mengusap kepalanya.
5. Menyediakan minuman kegemarannya,
sebagai contoh.

The positive interactions don't have to be big. But each interaction has to be meaningful to the child.

Note: Tip di atas boleh juga diguna pakai suami isteri.
Walau bagaimanapun, TIDAK DIGALAKKAN membeli LIMA hadiah samada untuk anak maupun isteri.

Walaupun best dapat hadiah, namum hadiah tidak banyak memberi impak emosi yang positif.
So don't waste your money, just RECONNECT.

Anak-anak Super Powers

Bagaimana mengajar anak-anak langsang membaca? Anak-anak yang membuak-buak dengan tenaga super powers?
Pastikan terdapat ADRENALINE PLAY sebelum sesi membaca (atau sesi pembelajaran yang lain).
Main sikit-sikit tak cukup untuk anak super powers ni.
Berlari sikit-sikit pun tak cukup.

Berlumba lari, melompat di atas trampolin, pillow fight, water fight dan gomol-menggomol ( rough and tumble play ) adalah di antara contoh adrenaline play. Pastikan ada elemen keseronokan dan sedikit takut sekali gus! Barulah terpancut adrenaline!



Sekira anda guru kelas membaca, dapatkan sokongan ibu bapa untuk melakukan Adrenaline Play di rumah sebelum datang kelas kerana faktor masa.
Saya tahu ada guru yang menjadikan aktiviti melompat di atas trampolin sebagai selingan aktiviti membaca.

Dicadangkan anak-anak super powers ini melakukan adrenaline play sekurang-kurangnya sekali sehari. Sesetengah yang terlajak lebih super power, memerlukan 2 kali adrenaline play dalam sehari.
Adrenaline play tidak digalakkan pada waktu hampir tidur.

Ibu bapa juga mesti menjaga diet anak-anak super power. No sugar please. No candies. No canned drinks.

Sekiranya anak-anak super power ini tidak daput menyalur keluar tenaga mereka yang membuak-buak , pasti mereka akan meragam, bad mood dan tiada fokus pembelajaran.

You Are Not Listening To Me!


Lately I've been very busy again. Between giving phonics training on weekends  and taking care of a cucu in the house! What more with my youngest, 12 year old son,  growing too fast ( to my liking ). 
There were many times he would say to me, "Ma you are not listening." " Ma you don't understand..."

And how many times have I said to him "Wait a minute" when he called me just because I had to answer whatsapp messages and questions from my FB friends?

Whoa! Time to press the PAUSE button.
Time to get connected back to him before he says, "I'm not asking you to listen to me anymore." "I'm not asking you to understand me anymore." "You are too busy."


So what did I do?
1. I put my phone or iPad down the minute he talks to me and immediately look into his eyes
Now we are sharing more stories. Laughing at jokes together. 
When he complains about how tough it is living with sisters ( he has 3 grown up sisters in the house!) who are always telling him to do this and that, I'd agree with him. I let him whine (... first ).
I let him feel safe with me. I let him feel good. I'm helping him feel calm.
I know when later I give him advice, he can take it well. 
Tak percaya cuba.

2. I make a point to PLAY with him, every day ( or every other day).
Yup we cuddle and tickle one another ( He's 12 going 13 ok. )
Allahuakbar, I felt so good! Happy! The gigglings made me feel young again too! ( Shhhh I'm 50 ... ). Aaah I could feel dopamine flowing in my blood!
And I know he's happier too.

3. I now send him to school every morning. For the past year I traded places with my hubby so that I'm not rushed to prepare breakfast for him ( hubby ). 
And I truly missed the du'as that my son used to make for me in the car on the way to school.
One of his du'as was " O Allah please make my parents' work be recognized and helpful to others...
 ( Ameen. Awww so sweet kan!)

Now we are doing it again. I love it.
Do encourage your small kids to make du'a for you every day. Rasa best sangat. Tak percaya cuba.

We also do hafazan in the car. Ok he does the hafazan. I can't do it so well when driving.  You know there are so many motorbikes, left and right on Jalan Gombak. 
So I let him laugh at me when I stumbled or got stuck. Really STUCK.

4. I try my very best to be his good friend. And he my BFF.
( All my girl BFFs are big now. Two are married. So they have their new BFFs. ) 
Well it's nice to have a boy as a BF for a change. 


Alhamdulillah. I can feel we are closer to one another now. Let's keep it that way for many many more years, if not forever. Love you AHO.

So Much To Share, So Little time

Exactly my feelings today when my husband a.k.a my colleague and I were invited by PPD Hulu Langat to talk about PHONICS to 88 English teacher from primary schools in that area. 

Usually we would recommend a one-day programme for teachers who are not familiar with phonics. But today we have only 3 hours. Well 3 hours is quite good for an introductory phonics course. I hope we did justice to the 3 hours.

Greetings from Encik Othman, co-author Readeasy Phonics and PhonicsConsultant for KSSR ENGLISH Year 1 and 2 textbooks. 

Taking turns Introducing each other. Pn Nik likes budu duriye, Encik Othman loves cucok badak.

We talked about SYNTHETIC PHONICS. Both Readeasy phonics and KSSR Phonics are written based on synthetic phonics.

What is Synthetic Phonics?
Synthetic phonics is a method of teaching reading which first teaches the smallest speech sounds ( phonemes ) and then builds up to blending these sounds together to achieve full pronunciation of words.

A very important point mentioned by Encik Othman is for teachers NOT to use letter names when teaching.

In Malaysia, before 2011, many of us, were taught to read in English by SPELL AND SAY method. In other words, we were actually NEVER taught to read. All we did was say the name of the letters in the word and 'read' it the way our teacher said it.

But not anymore. Since 2011 ( KSSR ENGLISH ) teachers are teaching pupils to DECODE WORDS by BLENDING sounds. Teachers are also teaching pupils to spell by SEGMENTING sounds. 

We also reminded teachers that they are required by the Ministry of Education to use the British Received Pronunciation when teaching. Bukan saja kami nak mengada -  ngada ya.

 We had FUN checking out pronunciations of some common every day words. 
" Siapa ajar sebut WEDNESDAY gitu?" 

Yes! Let's get back on the right track then! 
First things first. Practising to say all the 44 speech sounds in English.


Finally we shared some basic teaching steps with all the teachers.

Remember to 
1. Frequently REVISE sounds that have been taught. 
2. Keep showing the blending process using cards to train pupils to read by blending all the sounds.

Reading To Your Baby


1. Bacalah buku kepada bayi anda seawal umurnya 2 bulan ( Bulan pertama mungkin tak berkesempatan kerana sibuk mengurut dan bertungku. ) Kalau tak sempat minta tolong datuk nenek bacakan. 

2. Pilih satu dua buku yang akan dijadikan buku favourite bayi anda. Pastikan ilustrasi berwarna terang untuk menarik perhatian bayi. 

3. Baca lantang ( read aloud ) selama dua tiga minit, pada setiap sesi bacaan, dua tiga kali sehari ( kerap ).

4. Tidak perlu habiskan membaca seluruh buku setiap sesi. Pilih muka surat yang anda dan bayi akan enjoy.

5. Cari masa khas untuk anda bacakan buku kepada baby anda. Jadikan membaca sebelum tidur malam atau selepas mandi pagi sebagai READING MOMENTS anda bersama baby. Pastikan lampin baby kering, baby kenyang dan tidak mengantuk.

HAFAL SUKU KATA tidak SAMA DENGAN kebolehan mengGABUNG BUNYI. 

Percayalah ...
Hanya dengan mengenal 8 bunyi-huruf a i u n b m s k, kanak-kanak yang dilatih menggabung bunyi, mampu membaca 45 perkataan


Percayalah...
This is the POWER of phonics. 
This is the MAGIC of phonics.  

Kenapa? Kerana dengan melatih menggabung bunyi, mereka boleh membaca 'ba'. Mereka juga dengan mudah boleh membaca 'ab'. Ubah kedudukan huruf-huruf dan beritahu mereka untuk menggabung saja bunyi-bunyi tersebut.

Percayalah ...
Once they know sounds, they are able to read any possible combinations. 
Mereka tidak terikat kepada menghafal pola suku kata terbuka atau tertutup.

Percayalah ...
Dengan kebolehan menggabung bunyi kanak-kanak dapat membaca perkataan panjang dengan cukup mudah. Bagaimana? Dengan menggabung sahaja setiap bunyi daripada kiri ke kanan ( teknik rantaian bunyi / chaining ).

Nak pandai, zip mulut, duduk diam-diam.

Saya sering diberitahu " Puan anak saya tak boleh duduk diam semasa diajar membaca."
Betulkah hanya dengan duduk diam kanak-kanak  akan belajar dengan lebih baik?

Mungkin banyak di antara kita ( saya pun ) diasuh kalau nak belajar MESTI DUDUK DIAM.
Biasalah saya dengar ibu bapa dan juga guru yang berkata:
Nak belajar, duduk diam-diam.
Nak dengar cikgu cerita, zip mulut, duduk diam-diam.
Kalau banyak bergerak, kamu tak dapat apa yang cikgu ajar. 

Jom kita cuba faham kenapa kanak-kanak suka bergerak.
Di antara sebabnya:
1. Terlampau banyak gula dalam badan.
    Sila kawal pemakanan anak-anak. Kurangkan air manis dan junk food. Biasakan anak anda minum air kosong.

2. Kinesthetic learner ( geng kaki tangan ). Anak-anak kinesthetic learner mempelajari sesuatu melalui pergerakan.  
Mereka kurang menangkap kalau diajar dengan melihat flash cards atau buku semata-mata. Pelbagaikan teknik pengajaran dan pembelajaran ( PDP ). Pastikan PDP menarik ( engaging ) dan melibatkan pelajar secara aktif. 

3. Anak lelaki. Memang otak anak lelaki lebih mudah beku sekiranya mereka dipaksa belajar secara konvensional - Sit and do your work quietly. Do not move and do not talk - akan MENYIKSA anak kinestetik.
Kajian membuktikan anak lelaki 'wired to move'. Memang fitrah anak lelaki SUKA bergerak dan MESTI bergerak.

Bantulah anak kinestetik anda  belajar dengan lebih baik:
1. Let him MOVE. Sediakan bola besar utk mengantikan kerusi.



2. Berikan FIDGET TOY untuk dipegang sambil mendengar guru mengajar. Bola kecil, mainan yang boleh dipicit atau diramas. Jelaskan kepada pelajar, yang memerlukan FIDGET TOY, untuk memastikan mainan tersebut berada di tangan mereka sepanjang masa.
NO throwing or rolling to others.



3. Apabila mengajar bunyi beri mereka peluang membentuk huruf dengan doh,mencantum puzzle huruf dan menyentuh huruf berpasir.


4. Apabila mengajar membaca dengan menggabung bunyi, beri peluang mereka menggabung bunyi menggunakan kad huruf atau huruf plastik/kayu. 


5. Apabila membaca teks, minta mereka melakonkan apa yang dibaca.


6. Adakan 'breaks' yang lebih kerap. Ketuk ketampi adalah contoh exercise yang sangat baik. Telinga dipegang dan dipicit-picit sambil 'squatting'.

7. Tukar pendekatan mengajar anda. Apabila bercerita, cabar diri anda untuk mengHIDUPkan cerita anda.

Don't say to the children "Sit down and listen to the story". Make your story come ALIVE.
